The modern day hoody as we recognise it now can be traced all the way back to the Middles Ages period of history when a hooded cowl was worn by monks.
It is thought that the modern version of the hoody emerged in the 1930s when clothing company Champion produced the garment for warehouse workmen, to protect them from freezing temperatures. It quickly caught on among working men.
The appeal of the hoody eventually spread beyond the harsh environments of windy warehouses, helped in part by the designer Claire McCardell, who included the hoody in her fashion lines.
The modern day popularity of the hoody, and the extent of it’s adoption in every day life, is thought to dates back to the 1970s and the hip hop culture. The hoody provided cover and instant anonymity and is ideal for criminals. This gave the hoody an edgy cool. Popular culture quickly took this on. For example the hoody was a central icon in the movie ‘Rocky’. The hoody gained kudos as a gritty urban clothing item before very long.
